National Geographic filmmaker and adventurer Jon Bowermaster will take part in one of more than 60 workshops, lectures and public events at the second University of British Columbia Celebrate Learning Week Oct. 24-30.
The week features UBC and visiting experts on a wide range of learning topics – it is the analog to UBC’s Celebrate Research Week held in March.
“Teaching and learning is the cornerstone of any great university,” says David Farrar, UBC Provost and Vice President Academic. “The diversity and richness of learning opportunities at UBC represented at Celebrate Learning is a testament to our community’s dedication and enthusiasm to scholarship.”

The Future of Technology Enhanced Learning – Charles Dziuban, University of Central Florida Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Dodson Room, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre Charles Dziuban is Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness (RITE). He will share the latest results from a decade-long evaluation of online learning.
Teaching in Socially and Culturally Diverse Classrooms – UBC alumni Karrmen Crey and Amy Perreault Oct. 26, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Lillooet Room, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre A screening of What I Learned in Class Today: Aboriginal Issues in the Classroom will be followed by a discussion of politically and culturally contentious issues in the classroom.
The State of Children’s Development in BC – Clyde Hertzman, UBC Oct. 27, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street Clyde Hertzman, Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC, will speak to trends identified by the Early Development Instrument.
Seeing the World from Sea Level – Jon Bowermaster Oct. 30, 1 p.m.

National Geographic writer, filmmaker and adventurer Jon Bowermaster has been using the media to bring the world along as he explores the remote corners of the world. His 2007-2008 Antarctic expedition was the final in his OCEANS 8 project, which over the past decade has taken him and his teams around the world by sea kayak, giving him a one-of-a-kind look at both the health of the world’s oceans and the lives of the nearly 3 billion people around the globe who depend on them.
