The arrival off the coast of Vancouver Island of 76 migrants aboard a ship falsely calling itself the “Ocean Lady” earlier this month has prompted debate about Canada’s laws and policies surrounding illegal migration, human smuggling and the refugee-determination process.
Experts from Canada and Australia will discuss issues raised by this case at a public forum. Speakers include:
- Professor Benjamin Perrin: assistant professor, UBC Faculty of Law; faculty fellow, Liu Institute; former senior policy advisor to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (Canada).
- Dr. Andreas Schloenhardt: associate professor, University of Queensland; visiting professor, Liu Institute; Government of Australia advisor on migrant smuggling issues
- Daniel K. McLeod: barrister and solicitor, Preston Clark McLeod Lawyers and Notaries Public; instructor in Refugee Law for UBC CILPP (Certificate in Immigration: Laws, Policies and Procedures)
