UBC students and Downtown Eastside residents make beautiful music together

Event:      Gamelan music rehearsal by UBC students and DTES residents.

Date:       Monday, Nov. 30

Time:       12 p.m., noon

Location:   InterUrban Gallery

1 East Hastings Street, Vancouver

Thirteen UBC music students together with members of the Downtown Eastside community will perform for the public after completing a four-day workshop in gamelan music performance. Media are invited to hear a rehearsal of the performance at noon on Monday.

Together with UBC teaching assistant Rodrigo Caballero, the students are developing and implementing their own community arts program. The gamelan performance is part of the very first university course on inner city music in Canada, created and instructed by Dr. Klisala Harrison from the UBC School of Music. Gamelan music, originally from Indonesia, is played on an orchestra of specially-tuned xylophones, gongs and chimes as well as drums.

Through a collaborative process that nurtures healthy social interactions, DTES community members will co-create a music composition, and learn a traditional Indonesian work for pubic performance.  The

workshop will take place from Nov. 28 – Dec.1   at the Carnegie

Community Centre and InterUrban Gallery.

The public performance will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 5 – 6 p.m. at the InterUrban Gallery.
