Budget good news for universities: UBC President

Today’s Federal Budget contains good news for Canada’s post-secondary sector with numerous initiatives to strengthen Canada’s research capacity, UBC President Prof. Stephen Toope said.

“With substantial new support for post-doctoral scholars, the government has now rounded out a suite of post-graduate programs that will do much to attract and retain research talent for Canada,” Toope said.

Increases to Canada’s granting councils are welcome, Toope said, and viewed in the context of economic challenges facing governments in Canada and around the world, show a continuing commitment to the country’s knowledge economy.

Funding commitments to a range of science endeavours — from Genome Canada and TRIUMF to National Research Council technology clusters and the Canadian Space Agency — are strong acknowledgments of the powerful role that universities play in Canada’s research and development arenas, Toope said.

“UBC looks forward to the working with government as it carries out the budget’s recommendation of a comprehensive federal review of all federal support for R & D.”
