UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum opens on Saturday, Oct. 16, unveiling UBC’s natural history collections of more than two million specimens. The museum features a theatre, Canada’s largest blue whale skeleton and 20,000 sq. ft. of exhibits, including the limited-time Flora of British Columbia exhibition.
Highlights of opening weekend at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum:
- Join in the cutting of a blue whale cake at 12 p.m. on Saturday
- Explore the collections, including fossil displays, over 250 vertebrate displays, and over 50 shadowboxes and discovery drawers
- Indoor and outdoor family activities include a Biodiversity Treasure Hunt and other hands-on biodiversity fun
- Discover the Flora of British Columbia exhibit: A limited-time-only glimpse into the UBC Herbarium’s research collection

The annual UBC Botanical Garden Apple Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this weekend. Organizers have ordered more than 37,000 pounds of apples, including 9,000 pounds of organic fruit from local suppliers.
More than 70 varieties of heritage and new apples will be available, including Grimes Golden and Ambrosia apples. Also available for sale are apple trees grafted onto dwarfing root stock, ideal for the home garden or patio.
Highlights of the 20th Apple Festival:
- Apple tasting
- Johnny Appleseed Orchard children’s area featuring activities, apple pie, hot apple cider and other treats
- The Vancouver Island-based BC Fruit Testers Association will display nearly 200 B.C. grown varieties of apples and give demonstrations of grafting and cider-pressing. Public can bring varieties from their garden to be identified
- Master gardeners discuss apple-related diseases and pest management
- Craft vendors, UBC Herbarium merchandise and UBC Farm produceBuskers will provide musical entertainment and a musical performance will be held in the Roseline Sturdy Amphitheatre at 1 p.m. daily.
