UBC professor and acclaimed clinician-scientist Jerilynn C. Prior was awarded Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (SMCR)’s Ann Voda Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Dr. Peggy Stubbs, incoming President of SMCR said, “Dr. Prior has tirelessly, for over 30 years, worked to advance science related to ovulation in the menstrual cycle and to help women understand the importance of progesterone for their health.”

Prior, whose laboratory is on the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute campus, is the founder and scientific director of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation (CeMCOR). This innovative research centre is the only one in the world focused on ovulation and the relevance of progesterone to women’s health.

Santiago Ramón-García, a research associate with UBC Microbiology and Immunology, has received $100,000 in funding from Grand Challenges Canada to investigate new drug combinations for tuberculosis treatment.  The funding will enable Ramón-García to expand his work through international collaboration with TB researchers in South Africa.

The grant is one of 19 awarded to young Canadian research innovators in the first phase of the non-profit’s Canadian Rising Stars in Global Health initiative.

Grand Challenges Canada is a new global health organization funded by Canada’s foreign aid budget. Its purpose is to fund research to address some of the most difficult global health issues through integrated innovation.

UBC’s pulp and paper research will benefit from an investment by Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership announced June 24.  As part of a ceremony opening the new Canfor Pulp Innovation Centre in Burnaby,  Canfor Pulp announced a new research grant program in collaboration with UBC and the University of Northern British Columbia.  The program will provide a total of $225,000 over the next three years to university faculty for novel pulp and paper research projects.
