UBC releases results of ambitious international study of math
and science
How does Canadian student achievement in math and science compare
with that of students worldwide? How good are our best math and
science students? Do Canadian girls and boys perform equally well
in math and science?
David Robitaille, international co-ordinator of the Third International
Math and Science Study (TIMSS) and head of UBC's Dept. of Curriculum
Studies, will announce the results of the $4-million global survey
at a news conference on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Robitaille will also release the TIMSS results of the first national
sample of Canadian students which shows substantial differences
among the participating provinces, he says.
TIMSS compared curricula and teaching methods of school systems
as well as achievement scores and attitudes of about 250,000 students
in more than 50 countries. The knowledge and skill of grades 7 and
8 students in 15,000 schools was tested.
