School bullies topic of public lecture
- Lecture: Troublemakers, Bullies, and Clowns: Supporting
Students with Behaviour Problems in Schools
- Date: Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997
- Time: 7 p.m.
- Place: Templeton Secondary School Auditorium, 727 Templeton
Drive, Vancouver
One of the biggest problems facing schools today -- how to support
students with behavioural problems -- will be the subject of a talk
by UBC Education Assoc. Prof. Pat Mirenda.
In "Troublemakers, Bullies, and Clowns: Supporting Students with
Behaviour Problems in Schools" Mirenda will focus on the extraordinary
demands placed on teachers and school resources by children with
chronic behavioural problems.
Such students include both those with and without disabilities
who, for a variety of reasons, engage in anti-social, disruptive,
or dangerous behaviour that disrupts classrooms.
The free public lecture takes place Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at Vancouver's
Templeton Secondary School.
According to Mirenda, a recent British Columbia Teachers' Federation
survey reveals that classroom management concerns are one of the
top three sources of job dissatisfaction and stress among teachers.
Mirenda will draw upon recent research to examine how we currently
view, assess and support students with behavioural problems, and
how we might do so in the future.
Respondents in the discussion will be Kathy Champion, the district
principal for learning services with the Richmond School Board,
and Larry Koyangi, case manager from Admiral Seymour Elementary
School in Vancouver, who works with families and community resources
to find educational options for children with behavioural problems.
The talk is the first in a three-part series on important educational
issues in British Columbia sponsored by the Faculty of Education
at UBC.
