Gardener garners gold
Bruce Macdonald, director of UBC's Botanical Garden, has been awarded
the Royal Horticultural Society's most prestigious international
award, the Gold Veitch Memorial Medal. The award is given for outstanding
contribution to the advancement of the science and practice of horticulture.
Among his many achievements, Macdonald initiated the Botanical Garden's
innovative Plant Introduction Scheme which selects and introduces
new, lesser known and improved plants to nurseries. This is the
first time the medal has been given to a Canadian since it was first
presented in 1922.

March forth on March 4th!
That's the message Gordon Lovegrove, UBC's director of Transportation
Planning, is sending to the UBC community. On March 4, Trek to UBC
Day, Lovegrove is asking single-occupant vehicle (SOV) drivers to
use an alternative means of getting to UBC. That could mean cycling,
walking, telecommuting, using public transportation, or car or van
pooling. Lovegrove is working toward a goal of reducing SOV trips
to campus by 20 per cent.

Safeway staff pitch in for Parkinson's
The employees of the Canada Safeway store on West 10th Ave. are
supporting UBC's Movement Disorders Clinic with a $4,000 donation
raised through hot dog sales, barbecues and car washes. The donation
bought an adjustable height patient bed and weigh scales which will
be used in clinical trials of new Parkinson's disease medications.
