Take Mom on a tour of the world's most fascinating gardens for
free on Mother's Day, or select a gift from more than 10,000 choice
plants being offered at bargain prices during UBC's Ninth Perennial
Plant Sale, Sunday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"It's a growing tradition on the Lower Mainland to take in the
plant sale and take advantage of free admission to UBC's Botanical
Garden on Mother's Day," says Audrey Litherland, head of the 150-member
Friends of the Garden (FOGS) who donate over 30,000 hours a year
to the gardens and its public activities.
"Keen gardeners line up at dawn to purchase a special plant during
the sale but hundreds more, especially families, are drawn to the
UBC Botanical Garden to relax and enjoy it during one of its most
magical times of year," she adds.
High on the cliffs overlooking the Strait of Georgia, UBC's Botanical
Garden is actually many gardens, including an Asian Garden, Native
Garden, newly renovated Physic Garden (traditional medicinal plants),
Food Garden, and much more. Over 28 rambling hectares are planted
with 10,000 different shrubs and flowers, including Canada's largest
collection of Rhododendrons.
Visitors can all take something home from the garden. Many of the
superb plants on sale are from the UBC Botanical Garden. Others
are favourites from some of Vancouver's best gardens. FOGS and staff
- who have propagated the plants, which are of exceptional quality,
and labeled each with informative tags -- will be on hand to answer
all questions at the sale.
An unusually large selection of UBC's plant introductions will
be available, including the ever-popular Clematis `Blue Ravine,'
the international hit Lonicera `Mandarin,' and the hot new Clematis
`Lemon Bells.'
As well, a children's corner/activity centre is featured, food
and refreshments are available and author Marg Meikle will be signing
copies of her recently published Garden City: Vancouver.
