Larry Bell named chair of UBC Board of Governors
A UBC alumnus and business executive with extensive provincial
government service is the new chair of the University of British
Columbia's Board of Governors.
Larry Bell, vice-chair of food services company Shato Holdings
Ltd. and chair of its subsidiary White Spot Ltd., is appointed for
a term ending Aug. 31, 2001.
"I look forward to continuing my involvement with Dr. Piper and
the rest of the board in implementing Trek 2000, the university's
vision statement," says Bell. "We are well-positioned to reach our
goal of being the best public university in the country."
Bell was first appointed to the 15-member board in 1997.
A graduate of UBC (BA '61), Bell completed a master's degree in
California and then served the province as secretary to the B.C.
Treasury Board and deputy minister of: Housing and Transit; Lands,
Parks and Housing; and Finance. He has acted as chair and CEO of
B.C. Hydro, CEO of VanCity Savings Credit Union and president of
the Westar Group.
Bell has served on many boards including the Canadian Chamber of
Commerce, the Vancouver Board of Trade and the Conference Board
of Canada. He is also a director of the Vancouver Hospital Foundation.
Bell takes over from real estate developer Harold Kalke who has
served as chair since September 1998.
UBC's Board of Governors is responsible for the management, administration
and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of the
university including the appointment of senior officials and faculty
on the recommendation of the president.
Other board members are: Chancellor William Sauder, UBC President
Martha Piper, banking executive Linda Crompton, Anatomy Prof. Joanne
Emerman, communicator Stephen Howard, Anthropology and Sociology
Prof. M. Patricia Marchak, health educator Guninder C. Mumick, UBC
Bookstore staff member Ben Pong, resource management specialist
Linda Thorstad, architect Joe Wai and students Tieg Martin and Maili
Wong.
There are currently two vacancies on the board.
