Picture this -- there's lots to shoot at UBC
Photographers and weekend assignment editors looking to capture
the season need look no further than UBC's campus.
The largest indoor plant sale of its kind in the country
is in full swing at UBC's Botanical Garden from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m
(until Saturday, Sept. 15). Students picking up plants for new residences
are a photographer's dream, especially when they are balancing a
palm or another huge exotic on a bike or rollerblades. The garden
is at 6804 SW Marine Drive.
UBC's Nitobe Memorial Garden has earned a place among the
top 10 Japanese gardens outside of Japan. It was ranked fourth by
Japanese garden specialists in Europe, North America and Australia
in a recent survey conducted by the Journal of Japanese Gardening.
"This is no minor feat -- 300 gardens were included," says publisher
Douglas Roth. "It is an outstanding stroll garden of quiet, understated
beauty and human scale." The Nitobe Garden at Memorial Road and
Lower Mall is filled with scenes of fall serenity.
Every Wednesday morning Friends of the Garden donate armfuls of
fresh produce from the Food Garden to the Salvation Army.
The garden is a showcase of fruit and vegetables throughout the
growing season and an ideal spot to capture harvest time. Take a
look at the new path which makes the Asian garden accessible to
everyone as you make your way from the Shop in the Garden to the
Food Garden.
As well, Sept. 22 marks the 75th anniversary of the first classes
held on the Point Grey campus. The whole story and some terrific
archival photos are posted at http://www.library.ubc.ca/spcoll/ubc_arch/humble.html.
