UBC president meets with Kelowna students, alumni

University of British Columbia President Martha Piper will meet with Kelowna secondary students and UBC alumni Tuesday, Sept.19 to talk about the importance of post-secondary education, give insights about the university experience and report on the progress of Trek 2000, the university's vision document that was created in consultation with B.C. communities.

Piper; Brian Sullivan, vice-president, Students; and Alma Mater Society President Maryann Adamec will speak with city high school students who will gather for a presentation at Kelowna Senior Secondary School. New UBC programs and initiatives will be described such as the UBC Software Practices Lab that aims to improve software development; Foundations, a first-year Faculty of Arts program designed to offer exposure to a broad range of themes in the Humanities and Social Sciences; Arts Co-op that provides work experience for students studying in all 15 Arts departments and new degrees and programs in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.

In addition, students will learn about Imagine UBC, the university's orientation program for first-year students - one of the most comprehensive and successful programs of its kind in Canada.

The B.C. Wine Research Centre at UBC will be discussed at an evening reception for UBC alumni and friends of UBC at Mission Hill Winery. Dean of Agricultural Sciences Moura Quayle and Prof. Hennie Van Vuuren will discuss the activities of the centre and Piper and other speakers will report on the progress of Trek 2000.
