The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre: Highlights
- First in Canada to integrate information resources, services,
research activities, and interdisciplinary learning support
in one building
- Accessible to and by all British Columbians whether they
visit in person or by phone, fax, or email
- Provides on-demand access to information resources and
services for all lifelong learners, regardless of their location
- Provides information resources and support services to
organizations and individuals throughout B.C. that have specific
information needs (e.g. First nations, health care practitioners)
- Preserves collections that describe the richness of B.C.'s
and the world's histories and cultures and makes them available
to all
- Provides fundamental support to the learning programs of
British Columbia, whether they are based in the province or
around the world
- Works with the public, secondary, and post-secondary libraries
in British Columbia and throughout the world to provide direct
access to the resources and services of UBC Library
- Supports UBC's first laptop loan program, for UBC as well
as community users
- Provides a gateway and conduit to UBC Library's extensive
collection of 10 million items, 35,000 print subscriptions,
10,000 electronic full-text journals, more than 13,000 electronic
indexes, and rare books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, and
other materials valued at $1.6 billion, as well as to other
library collections in B.C. and around the world
- Offers on-demand video-streaming of Learning Centre programs
(i.e. lectures, concerts, symposia) to B.C. and beyond
- House lecture halls, meeting space, adaptable classrooms,
and seminar rooms to support UBC's interdisciplinary and information
studies programs as well as community events
- Integrates people, programs, and ideas to support and encourage
innovation
