Seventy years after Japanese Canadian UBC students were forcibly removed and exiled from the B.C. coast, UBC is examining its own role in this injustice with a symposium.
Former Canadian prime ministers Joe Clark and Paul Martin and iconic singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie are among those receiving honorary degrees from UBC this year. Others who will receive the degrees at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia include a philanthropist for Buddhism studies, a globe-trotting husband-and-wife ethnobotanist team and a beloved symphony conductor.
Between Wednesday Nov. 24 and Friday Nov. 26, more than 2,000 UBC undergraduate and graduate degrees from all 12 Vancouver faculties will be conferred.
More than 6,500 students will graduate this week as UBC holds ceremonies at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. They will join more than 250,000 UBC alumni worldwide.
