Researcher awarded international health policy fellowship

Diane Watson, a researcher with the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, is one of two Canadians this year to be named a Harkness Associate. She is the second faculty member from the Centre to be honoured by the program, which supports and develops promising health policy researchers and practitioners from around the world.

Coordinated by the US-based Commonwealth Fund, the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy program partners with the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) to recognize two Canadian researchers each year along. For more information visit: www.chspr.ubc.ca.

Engineering trio recognized for contributions to student success

Bruce Dunwoody, Applied Science Associate Dean of Engineering Programs, Susanne Milner, Engineering Student Services Advisor, and Ian McKechnie, a fourth-year Mining Engineering student have received the 2006 UBC Just Desserts Awards. A tradition organized by the Alma Mater Society, the awards have been recognizing faculty, staff andstudent contributions to student growth and success since 1985. All three 2006 winners were nominated by the Engineering Undergraduate Society for their extraordinary service to Applied Science students.

Computer science ties 13th out of 83 teams in world finals

Out of more than 200,000 students from 2,000 colleges and universities in 84 countries – a group of UBC computer science programming students have tied for 13th place at the 30th Annual International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in San Antonio Texas. Sponsored by IBM and the Association for Computing Machinery, the team includes coach Bartholomew Furrow, Yury Kholondyrev, Wei-Lung Dustin Tseng, Mathew Chan, and Michael Chuang. UBC teams placed 15th and 17th at the two previous finals in Prague and Shanghai respectively.
