UBC clinical professor appointed to Order of Canada

Harvey Thommasen, an Assistant Clinical Prof. in UBC’s Department of Family Practice Medicine, was recently appointed to Member of the Order of Canada on July 24, 2006. Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is the highest honour awarded to Canadian citizens for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation honouring people in all sectors of Canadian society.

Thommasen has published several research projects on physician retention and burnout/depression in rural BC communities. With 12 years of experience in family medicine in rural B.C., he has an intimate understanding of the unique problems and challenges faced by physicians in isolated areas.

Thommasen is also a past Prof. and Chair of the Department of Community Health at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George. He is the recipient of a number of awards such as the Order of BC (2000), a Vancouver Foundation/BCMSF Community-based Clinician Investigator award, the North American Primary Care Research Group Investigator in Practice Award (1999), and a Practice of Excellence Award for Outstanding Care by a Canadian Family Physician (1997).

Top Canadian book designs on display

From Aug. 10 – Sept. 22, the winners of the 2005 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada will be on display at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The display will be housed in the fourth floor Ridington Room, 1961 East Mall.

Founded in 1965, the Alcuin Society promotes a wider appreciation of books and reading and supports excellence in book design and production. Since 1981, it has sponsored the oldest national competition to recognize fine book design in Canada. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre supports learning and research for users at UBC, throughout the province and globally.

2006-07 UBC School of Music's new concert season program

The UBC School of Music’s new calendar gives detailed information for Pacific Spirit Concerts, Wednesday Noon Hours, UBC Opera Ensemble productions, the Borealis String Quartet series and special events. New this year is a production initiated by UBC Composers of interactive electronics, video, movement and music at the Telus Studio Theatre in the Chan Centre called “Sound Extensions” and the inaugural performances of a newly created new music ensemble of faculty performers called the “Nu: BC Collective.”

Seeking Canadian youth delegates for the Ship for World Youth

The Ship for World Youth (SWY) is looking for young global citizens to represent Canada in this UN-supported, cruise-based youth program. For the second year in a row, 11 young Canadians will embark on the 19th annual SWY with the opportunity to lecture to hundreds of young people from nations around the world on the topic of activism for social change. Funded by the Government of Japan, the delegates will join young leaders from every continent. The youth deadline is Sept 8, 2006.
