2006 student 'Shinerama Week'

Student volunteers will shine shoes, cars and anything that warrants a new sheen to support cystic fibrosis research, the most common fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser, involving students from more than 55 universities and colleges. The campaign, which began in 1964, has raised almost $16 million to help fund cystic fibrosis research and treatment programs. UBC student organizers are aiming for $20,000 this year, and in honour of these efforts, Mayor Sam Sullivan has proclaimed Saturday, Sept. 9 Shinerama Day in the City of Vancouver.

Other Shinerama events range from contests and raffles at athletics events, car washes and the “Roundup” program at the UBC bookstore and friendly competitions between residences and Faculties. More information: www.ams.ubc.ca/shinerama.

The first student from a non-US doctoral program to receive the award, Bedi is also the first recipient to have been supervised by a previous Kirk award winner, Dr. Beth Haverkamp, a counselling psychology faculty member.

Bedi completed an APA-accredited internship at the University of South Florida and a post-doctoral clinical appointment with Kaiser-Permanente in San Rafael, California. He is returning to B.C. to accept a position as Assistant Prof. at the University of Victoria.
