UBC Centre for Japanese Research presents Ikuyu Nakamichi piano recital

The UBC Centre for Japanese Research presents a recital by internationally acclaimed pianist Ikuyu Nakamichi on Wednesday May 17, 2006, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The concert recognizes the 50th Anniversary of the Vancouver Japanese Businessmens' Group (Boeki Konwakai) as a founding donor of the Centre for Japanese Research who helped raise more than $1 million to assist in renovations of the UBC Nitobe Memorial Garden. The event was also greatly facilitated by UBC Emeritus Fine Arts Professor Mori Matsumoto.

About the Artist: Ikuyu Nakamichi studied under Prof. Klaus Schilde at the Hochschüle für Musik in Munich on a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The winner of numerous international awards she has performed with leading orchestras across Japan, Europe and the US. In April 1999, Nakamichi gave her debut performance in New York at Carnegie Hall. She also performed at Windsor Castle for Prince Charles' 2005 wedding reception. UBC and TELUS partner on new health website

In partnership with TELUS and the UBC Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC), a new website featuring Canadian health and wellness information was launched this week. In addition to feature health stories, the IKBLC provides supporting information and access to online reference services, webcasts and educational information provided by the UBC Library and libraries worldwide. Three poetry book releases for UBC grads

The UBC Robson Square Bookstore recently held a book launch for three newly released books of poetry by UBC alumni. Michael V. Smith’s "What You Can't Have" (Signature Editions), Elizabeth Bachinsky's "Home of Sudden Service" (Nightwood Editions), and Jennica Harper's "The Octopus" (Nightwood Editions). UBC grad shortlisted for 2005 award for best Canadian juvenile mystery

Sheldon Goldfarb, UBC Alumnus and Alma Mater Society archivist, recently had his novel “Remember, Remember” (UKA Press) shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis award for best Canadian juvenile mystery of 2005. A story of blackmail and murder set in Victorian England, the Montreal Gazette writes: "Goldfarb is a good writer [and] the possibility of a sequel clearly presents itself." UBC alumni take home honours at BC Book Prizes

Alumna Charlotte Gill won the Fiction Prize for her thesis "Ladykiller" (Thomas Allen publishers) and alumna Barbara Nickel won the Children's Literature Prize for her book "Hanna Waters and the Daughter of Johann Sebastian Bach" (Penguin). In addition, both books were also Governor General Award nominees.
