Four members of UBC community awarded Order of B.C.

Dr. Larry Goldenberg has been recognized for his contributions to prostate cancer research and treatment. Goldenberg is head of the Division of Urology in the Dept. of Surgery, director of the UBC Centre of Excellence for Prostate Research and the Prostate Centre at VGH, and a member of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

Dr. Erich Vogt, professor emeritus at TRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics on the UBC campus, was recognized for advances in science. UBC supporters Gerald McGavin and Dr. Wallace Chung, professor emeritus of Surgery and UBC Library patron, were also honoured for their philanthropy.

Recipients of the Order of British Columbia are outstanding citizens of B.C. who have contributed to strengthening the province and have made a significant difference in the lives of their fellow citizens, most often without being heralded or rewarded.

Faculty of Graduate Studies Dean pro tem announced

As Dean Frieda Granot concludes her appointment on June 30th after ten years of service, Dr. Ann Rose has been named Dean pro tem for the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Rose is a Professor of Medical Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine and has a broad educational background in social science, psychology, neuroanatomy and genetics. She holds CIHR and NSERC grants and recently completed a contract with the Canadian Space Agency. She served as Director of the Genetics Graduate Program for three years and has been the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ Associate Dean for the past six years.

UBC researcher awarded BC Aquaculture and Environment Innovation award

Dr. Shannon Balfry was awarded a BC Innovation award, supported by the Aquaculture and Environmental Research Fund and delivered by the BC Innovation Council through the BC Aquaculture Research and Development Committee. One of four BC awards presented, the awards support long-term collaborative research in support of environmental sustainability solutions for the BC aquaculture industry.

Balfry is a researcher with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems’ Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Research, a research centre jointly run by UBC and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The $200,000 award will support Balfry’s research around three critical factors in fish health: host, pathogen and the environment.

Engineering professor awarded Romanian prize

Electrical and Computer Engineering Prof. Edmond Cretu has received the Tudor Tanasescu Prize from the Romanian Academy for a group of papers he co-authored in the field of microsystems. This prize is the most important Romanian distinction for science and information technology achievement and can be received only once in a lifetime.

Engineering professors elected as 2006 Fellows

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Prof. André Ivanov was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to infrastructure intellectual property for system-on-a-chip testing. ECE Prof. Resve Saleh was elected a Fellow for his contributions to mixed-signal integrated circuit simulation and design verification.

The world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology with 365,000 members in 150 countries, the IEEE confers the grade of Fellow to engineers who have demonstrated outstanding proficiency and distinction in their profession.

Former athletic director “Bus” Phillips passes away at 91

Russell James Spence "Bus" Philips, UBC's Athletic Director (1953-1980), passed away May 5, nine days after suffering a stroke. UBC Athletics' elder statesman, "Bus" left a lasting legacy of directing the athletics department for a record 27 years. He also taught at the School of Human Kinetics and coached Thunderbird track and field.

He was known across Western Canada as Canada West’s Secretary / Treasurer from its formative years until 1992, after having been one of the founding fathers of the Canada West Conference. There will be an informal gathering to honour Bus’s life at the University Club, 5185 University Blvd, UBC Endowment Lands, from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 28.
