New Faculty of Science Dean

Simon Peacock officially starts his term this month as the new Dean of the Faculty of Science. Peacock most recently held the position of Divisional Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University, a position that oversaw eight academic units and four interdisciplinary research centres.

Prior to serving as Divisional Dean, he served as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Personnel (2003-04) and as Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences (1997-2003). Peacock earned BS and MS degrees in Geology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1981) and a PhD in Geology from the University of California, Los Angeles (1985). He joined the Dept. Geology at Arizona State University as an Asst. Professor in 1985, was promoted to Assoc. Professor with tenure in 1990 and achieved Full Professor in 1996. Peacock was a Guest Professor at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland (1991-92) and was a Visiting Scientist at the Pacific Geoscience Centre in Sidney, BC (1998-99).

An elected Fellow of the Geological Society of America, Peacock’s research focuses on the thermal, petrologic and seismological structure of subduction zones – places on earth where tectonic plates dive into the Earth’s mantle triggering great earthquakes and explosive volcanism. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation for the past 20 years and he has published more than 50 articles in peer reviewed journals including Science and Nature.

UBC policy expert featured in CIHR research spotlight

UBC pharmaceutical policy expert Steve Morgan was recently featured as a ‘research highlight’ for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Morgan, a faculty member with the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, investigates the causes of pharmaceutical expenditure growth, pharmaceutical insurance programs, and the financing and implementation of new health care technologies. In the September issue of CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy research spotlight, he discusses Canada's National Pharmaceuticals Strategy and the essential role of the research community in pharmaceutical policy.
