28 Thunderbirds bound for Bangkok

A record 28 UBC varsity student-athletes will suit up for Canada at the upcoming World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. This multi-sport event for post-secondary students takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympics in terms of participation. The Bangkok Games will feature around 8,000 student-athletes from more than 140 countries competing in 18 sports.

Thunderbird swimming and women’s volleyball are particularly well represented, with 14 members of the 33-person Canadian swim team coming from the Point Grey campus, and four out of 12 volleyball players originating from UBC. The Thunderbirds are also sending student-athletes in women’s and men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s golf and track and field.
