UBC professor appointed Scientist-in-Residence

The UBC School of Journalism has appointed Prof. Sid Katz as the first Scientist-in-Residence as part of its science journalism initiative. Katz is a UBC science educator, journalist and professor of pharmacology, as well as Executive Director of UBC’s Community Affairs and Managing Director of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. As scientist-in-residence for the academic year 2007-2008, he will teach and assist students with their research and thesis projects, and advise the school’s Science Journalism Research Group in its four-year investigation into the public communication of controversial science.

UBC named in global top 15 green colleges and universities

Grist Magazine has named UBC number seven in its global list of top 15 green colleges and universities list, ahead of Stanford and California State University. The magazine notes that UBC is Canada’s first and only university to receive Campus Ecology Recognition from the U.S.-based National Wildlife Federation and it recognizes the university’s sustainable development policy and Sustainability Office.

Grist is an online environmental magazine launched in 1999 with a monthly readership of 700,000. It has published Top 15 Green lists on a variety of topics including global cities, movies, politicians and musicians.

UBC connects with marginalized youth

Creating Possibilities is a one-day event to introduce marginalized youth to UBC. On Aug. 17, 13 youth between the ages of nine and 12 from the Hamilton Community Centre in Richmond will join in educational activities at the University. The goal is to make a difference in the youths’ lives by providing a connection with the UBC campus and flagging post-secondary education as an approachable option. Media are welcome to attend.

UBC rated 36th in the world

For the second straight year, UBC has rated 36th among the world’s best universities as ranked by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The rankings annually rate the world’s top 500 universities. The other Canadian universities in the top 100 are the University of Toronto, McGill University and McMaster University.

UBC Fisheries Centre hosts fish-printing seminar

Mineo Yamamoto, a master gyotaku printer from Japan, will visit UBC’s Fisheries Centre on Aug. 23 to give a fish-printing seminar and workshop. Gyotaku is the art of Japanese fish-printing which involves indirectly replicating the fish through the use of paper and ink or paint.
