Thunderbirds show well at Universiade
UBC swimmers brought home about one-third of Canada’s 16 medals from the 2007 Summer Universiade (World University Games). Brian Johns won gold in the 200-metre individual medley and bronze in the 200 freestyle; Darryl Rudolf won gold in the 100 butterfly; Annamay Pierce earned a bronze in the 200 breaststroke in Canadian-record time; and Scott Dickens claimed bronze in the 100 breaststroke. In addition, Johns and Rudolf made up one-half of the silver-medal-winning 4x100 freestyle relay team and T-Bird Callum Ng set a new Canadian record in the 50 backstroke.
Outside the pool, strong results for Canada included a surprising fourth-place finish for men’s soccer, which counted T-Birds Mike Elliot, Steve Frazao and Paul Seymour on its roster. UBC swimming coach Derrick Schoof served as head coach for swimming and Human Kinetics sessional instructor and men’s soccer coach Mike Mosher assisted with soccer.
