UBC Professor Elected ECI Prize Winner 2007

The Germany-based International Ecology Institute (ECI) has named Prof. Daniel Pauly of the UBC Fisheries Centre the ECI Prize Winner 2007. The ECI Prize recognizes achievements in fostering ecological knowledge and awareness.

UBC Clinical Professor Receives 2007 CMA May Cohen Award

The Canadian Medical Association has given Dr. Jan Christilaw from the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Faculty of Medicine, the 2007 May Cohen Award for the promotion of women’s health.

New Acting Director for CHSPR Appointed

The Centre of Health Services and Policy Research has appointed Dr. Morris Barer as its acting director. Dr. Barer served as the scientific director of the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research from 2000-06. He succeeds Dr. Charlyn Black, CHSPR director since 2002.

First Nations House of Learning Appoints New Coordinator

William Lindsay is the new coordinator for Aboriginal Student Services at the First Nations House of Learning (FNHL). Lindsay is responsible for coordinating programs and services that support the participation and success of aboriginal students at UBC. Services include housing, financial assistance, awards, and academic advising.

Science Journalism Prize Winners Announced

The Science Journalism Research Group at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism has announced the first three winners of its first annual competition for excellence in Canadian science reporting.

Prizes of $3,000 are awarded to Canadian Geographic’s Allan Casey, Daily Planet’s Carol McGrath and CBC.ca’s Stephen Strauss for contributions in print, broadcast and Internet science journalism, respectively.

A fourth award, the Barry Lando Prize for Best Science Journalism Overall, will be announced at the Future Directions in Science Journalism conference Nov. 9-10.
