Four members of UBC Community receive the Order of Canada

Four members of the UBC community were appointed to the Order of Canada by Governor General Michaëlle Jean on Feb. 20.

Alumnus Robert Louie, Board of Governors member and Chief of the Westbank First Nations; William H. New, University Killam Prof. Emeritus, and Jaymie Matthews, Assoc. Prof. of Physics and Astronomy were all named to the rank of Officer. Jonathan Stoessl, Prof. of Neurology and Director of the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre, was named Member of the order.

Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is the highest honour awarded to Canadian citizens for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

UBC mathematician wins $70,000 Killam Research Fellowship

On Feb. 22, UBC Prof. Edwin Perkins, a Canada Research Chair in mathematics, was named as one of 10 2007 Killam Research Fellows for his research on Interactive Branching Population Models.

The awards, worth $70,000 a year, support scholars engaged in research projects in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary studies within these fields.

UBC doctor receives Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) award

Dr. Ravinder Sidhu, Assistant Prof. in UBC’s Division of Vascular Surgery, has received the Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit in 2007 for his outstanding commitment to medical education at UBC.

Sidhu has pursued education and educational research as the focus of his scholarly activities, and he has been engaged in research in the areas of technical skills evaluation, optimum learning environments and assessment.
