UBC hosts staff welcome back BBQ

This year’s staff barbecue will be held Sep. 12 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Flag Pole Plaza. Hosted by the President’s Office and Human Resources and produced by Ceremonies and Events, this event welcomes staff back to the new academic year and includes a free UBC Catering BBQ lunch, live entertainment and information booths. Attendance wristbands are required.

Pharmaceutical students to receive white coats

153 first year pharmaceutical students will receive their coats in the annual White Coat ceremony on Sep. 6 at UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, symbolizing their induction into the study of pharmacy. Seven PharmD students will also receive coats as part of a renewal of their Pledge of Professionalism. This ceremony emphasizes the importance of professionalism and affirms the students’ commitment to the highest standards of ethics and patient care.

UBC student selected as Young Ambassador

Kai Sheffield, a fourth-year international relations student, has been selected as the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) Young Ambassador at UBC. Young Ambassadors are undergraduate students from North America who have recently studied in Germany and are interested in promoting study in Germany at their home universities and colleges. Sheffield will work with the Institute for European Studies and GoGlobal.

DAAD – the German Academic Exchange Service – is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. For more information, visit http://www.daad.org/page/ambassadors/.

Human Resources and the Learning Exchange offer leadership program

Following a successful pilot program last winter, Human Resources and the Learning Exchange offer the Community Learning Initiative Learning Program (CLILP) to UBC staff, alumni and graduate students.  Beginning in October 2007, participants will explore ideas about leadership through a series of workshops, and will work with about 200 undergraduate students from 12 courses at UBC to complete 20 short-term projects in not-for-profit organizations in the community.

MFA Thesis feature film to have world premiere in Vancouver 

Gwen Haworth’s MFA thesis film, She’s A Boy I Knew, will have its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival on Oct. 5. Using archival family footage, family interviews, phone messages and hand-drawn animation, Haworth’s documentary chronicles Steven Haworth’s decision to come out to his family about his life-long female gender identity and the journey to becoming Gwen Haworth. 

The Vancouver Film Festival takes place Sep. 27 – Oct. 12; tickets go on sale Sep. 8. For more information, visit www.viff.org.

UBC’s West Coast Suites invites the public to a viewing

West Coast Suites, a limited service 47-suite hotel on UBC’s Point Grey campus, will host an open house on Sep. 13 from 1 – 4 p.m. The Suites, which reopened on Aug. 1 after an extensive renovation, are located at 5961 Student Union Boulevard.
