 UBC student wins at Model EU
Six UBC undergraduate students represented France, Portugal and Malta as delegates in the University of Washington’s 2008 Model European Union this week. One of them, Kris Hetherington, was named Outstanding Head of State for his representation of France.
The Northwest Model European Union is the second largest of its kind in North America, and includes universities and colleges from the United States and Canada. Similar to the Model United Nations, this exercise is to familiarize students with the dynamics of European Union institutions through simulations.

Astronomy professor inducted to Order of Canada
Prof. Jaymie Matthews, Department of Physics and Astronomy, was inducted this week as an officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contribution to space research and stellar seismology, the use of star pulsations to probe their composition and history.

UBC Killam Research Prizes awarded
The Office of the Vice President, Research annually awards up to 10 Killam Research Prizes of $5,000 each to fulltime faculty members for their research and contributions of international significance. Funds are provided from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies, established through a bequest from the late Dorothy J. Killam.

Zoology professor wins naturalist award
Prof. Dolph Schluter, Department of Zoology, has also been awarded the 2007 Centre Sewall Wright Award from the American Society of Naturalists (ASN) in recognition of his contributions to further the conceptual unification of the biological sciences.

UBC Athletics volunteer named Volunteer of the Year
Alumnus Marty Zlotnik has been chosen as the National Association of Athletic Directors of Development (NAADD) Volunteer of the Year for his work with UBC, UBC Athletics and in the Vancouver community. The award will be given at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in Dallas this June.

Readings at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre
Two acclaimed authors will visit the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre next week to give readings as part of the Robson Reading Series, co-presented with the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad:
Wayson Choy is a Vancouver-born Canadian writer of Chinese ancestry who spent his childhood in Vancouver’s Chinatown. His latest novel, All that Matters, was nominated for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Rawi Hage is a writer, visual artist and curator born in Beirut and living in Canada since 1992. His novel, DeNiro’s Game, was nominated for the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s award.

Pollay Prize lecture to address food choice influences
Marketing Prof. Lauren Block, from the Zicklin School of Business, City University of New York, is the winner of the 2008 Pollay Prize from the Sauder School of Business. As part of the award, she will present the 2008 Pollay Prize Lecture, entitled Salad Daze and Frappucino Focus: What Influences Our Food Choices?
The Pollay Prize, inaugurated in 2006 and named after UBC Sauder School of Business Professor Emeritus Richard Pollay, honours intellectual excellence in research on marketing in the public interest. Pollay is an expert on tobacco industry advertising and a scholar who has investigated the history, regulation, values and social effects of advertising.

Students are invited to attend an information session on summer or fall 2008 internships with the Students for Development Program, bringing together Canadian university students and partners in developing countries to contribute to capacity-building. Applications for internships are due by 1:30 p.m., March 11.

Graduate student conference on globalized Asia
UBC’s Institute of Asian Research will host a three-day graduate student conference entitled Globalized Asia: Challenges and Opportunities. Along with papers presented by students, Dr. Mike Douglass, Director of the Globalization Research Center and Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaii, will be the keynote speaker.

University administrators to gather at UBC
UBC is the official sponsor of the International Meeting of University Administrators (IMUA) 2008 conference in Vancouver this summer. The IMUA is a forum for the discussion of management and administration issues in higher education. This year’s theme is globalization.
