UBC ranks sixth in top 10 places to work survey

Readers of The Scientist magazine have ranked the University of British Columbia as one of the top 10 places to work in academia.

The sixth-place finish in the magazine's international survey makes UBC the top-ranked Canadian institution.

Sports helmet invention wins award

A sports helmet invented by UBC researchers has been named Winner of the 2008 Popular Science Best of What's New award in the Personal Health category.

The Pro-Neck-Tor helmet, co-developed by Mechanical Engineering’s Prof. Peter Cripton and PhD candidate Tim Nelson, has been shown in preliminary testing to reduce direct impact to the neck by up to 56 per cent.

Published every December, the Popular Science magazine's Best of What's New awards are given to 100 new products and technologies in 11 categories.

Geology director receives lecture award

Richard Tosdal, Director of UBC’s Mineral Deposit Research Unit, has been named the 2009 Society of Economic Geologists Thayer Lindsay Lecturer, an award given in the field of economic geology.

Tosdal will tour in 2009 giving lectures at colleges and universities with geologic programs related to mineral resources.

Institute of Asian Research and Peter Wall Institute co-host international conference

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Canada, UBC’s Program on Inner Asia at the Institute of Asian Resarch and Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies will co-host an international conference entitled Contemporary Mongolia - Transitions, Development and Social Transformations.

Events at UBC World AIDS Day

The UBC World AIDS Day (WAD) Campaign is hosting a week-long series of events to help educate students and the greater Vancouver community about HIV/AIDS and raise money for local and international AIDS groups.

Events will include:

  • Nov. 17: Opening at Wired Monk Coffee Bistro
  • Nov. 18: Networking Fair and Forum: Criminalization of Health: Community Perspectives on HIV/AIDS and Harm Reduction and Candle Light Vigil
  • Nov. 19: Film Night - Yesterday
  • Nov. 20: HIV/AIDS Workshop and Club Night Fundraiser
  • Nov. 21: Wear Red Day - UBC campus-wide
