UBC PeopleUBC professor awarded ecology prizeThe 2008 Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology will be given to UBC’s Prof. Daniel Pauly in a ceremony presided by President Montilla, Generalitat of Catalonia at theWorld Congress for Nature in Barcelona on Oct. 6. The Ramon Margalef Prize recognizes the career or discovery in the field of ecology contributing to the sustainable management of natural resources. Pauly was chosen among 17 candidates for his contributions to research and awareness of the global impacts of fisheries on marine ecosystems. UBC instructor makes Giller Prize listUBC creative writing instructor Steven Galloway is among the list of authors considered for the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel, The Cellist of Sarajevo, a story set during the siege in the mid-1990s, recounting the struggles of three inhabitants and a cellist, who plays each afternoon in a crater left by a mortar shell in front of his building. New Director for Learning CentreUBC Library has announced that Sandra Singh will begin as Director of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre on Nov. 1, 2008. Landscape architecture student wins international awardUBC landscape architecture student Ellen Pond, has received the American Society of Landscape Architect’s Research Honor Award for her study Revealing Climate Change Mitigation in the Landscapes of the Future: Retrofitting Residential Neighbourhoods, A Burnaby Case Study. Pond’s research demonstrates how retrofitting existing residential neighbourhoods can reduce emissions from household energy, transportation, and food while allowing for population increases. Creative writing instructor receives awardUBC creative writing instructor Deborah Campbell, has won the Dave Greber Freelance Writers Magazine Award for her article published in the April 2008 issue of Harper’s magazine. Entitled Exodus: Where will Iraq Go Next?, the article is based on the two months she spent living among Iraqi refugees in Syria. The award will be presented Sept. 28 at the Word on The Street Book and Magazine Festival in Vancouver.
Applied Science receives support for bioenergy researchUBC Applied Science is among the beneficiaries of the Ministry of Forests and Range's $600,000 support for developing B.C.’s wood bioenergy sector. This funding will help scientists continue research into new uses for wood biomass resources in the emerging bio-industry. UBC professor gives design vision for CIRSDr. John Robinson will share his vision and design insight for UBC’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) at a talk entitled Transitioning to a Sustainable Campus: Creating the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability. The CIRS facility’s goal to radically reduce emissions, materials consumption, energy and water use is to live within building footprint using the site’s sources of sun, wind and ground for of its electricity and lighting, water supply, liquid waste treatment, ventilation, heating and cooling.
Irving K. Barber B.C. Scholarship Society awards scholarshipsThe Irving K. Barber B.C. Scholarship Society, in partnership with One World International Scholarship for Study in B.C., has awarded 4 students from China a $10,000 scholarship each towards studies at post-secondary institutions in B.C. The scholarships are currently available to students from the People’s Republic of China, whose government has established a similar program to host B.C. students. Student research investigates use of cognitive enhancersRana Ahmad, a UBC PhD candidate in philosophy, is investigating how people evaluate the rise and ethical use of cognitive enhancers, such as Ritalin which is normally prescribed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Ahmad’s research in the new field of neuroethics involves an online survey at the UBC Centre for Applied Ethics. Those interested in taking the survey can visit: www.yourviews.ubc.ca. Clean Energy Research Centre Speaker Series Clean Energy Research Centre Speaker SeriesProf. Roland Clift, Centre for Environmental Strategy from University of Surrey, UK, will give a talk entitled Biomass and biofuels—truths, lies and promises. Clift’s research specializes in Environmental System Analysis, including Life Cycle Assessment, Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Energy Systems.

Green College presents Writer-in-ResidencePatricia Robertson, Green College’s 2008 Writer-in-Residence will be hosting a series of free talks to the UBC community, entitled Is Fiction an Endangered Species? Robertson was one of 20 Canadian short story writers featured in this summer’s Green College series Salon des Refusés. Her work has been nominated for the Ethel Wilson Fiction prize, the Journey Prize, the National Magazine Awards, the CBC Literary Awards, and the Pushcart Prize.
First Nations Studies hosts discussion on Inuit rightsUBC’s First Nations Studies Program is hosting a discussion given by Mary Simon, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national Inuit organization in Canada. Simon will be speaking with students about her role in advancing Inuit interests, the recent Residential Schools apology, and the upcoming federal election.
Lectures given by Institute of Asian ResearchThe Centre for Japanese Research will host a lecture A Symbiotic Alliance: America's Dependence on Japanese Capital given by Prof. Daniel Okimoto, Stanford University, who specializes on the political economy of Japan.
The Centre for Chinese Research will host a lecture given by Prof. Gregory Chin, York University, entitled Party Reform in China: Promoting “Leadership Science” and Management Innovation, which examines how the Chinese Communist Party has responded to pressures of societal change, modernization, and globalization.
The Centre for Southeast Asia Research will host a lecture by Ambassador John Holmes, Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, entitled Dialogue on Canada-Indonesia Relations.
