Researchers develop online tests to assess navigational skills
UBC neurology professor Jason Barton and Asst. Prof. Giuseppe Iaria from the University of Calgary, with the assistance of Tali Cherniawsky and Dylan Sargent from the University of Victoria, have developed a series of on-line tests that characterize peoples’ navigational difficulties.
Last year, Barton and Iaria documented the first case of a patient who, without apparent brain damage or other cognitive impairment, was unable to orient within any environment (http://www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/media/releases/2008/mr-08-123.html). They hope to translate their investigation into rehabilitation treatments for those who have what they refer to as developmental topographical disorientation (DTD).
